The fact that prefaces often begin by describing how difficult it is to write one should have been a warning. But prefaces are there, and their existence is a reminder that trying to escape from praising a book is much more difficult than writing one. To write the preface to a book is a complex human behavior. Sedimented on variegated motivations, affinities, and skills, it’s an honor and something that makes its author proud.
