It is a great honor to serve as editor for this book of robotic surgery. The da Vinci Surgical System was first launched in 1999. In the beginning, the device was marketed with major features that included fine tissue manipulation capability, such as in coronary artery bypass grafting. Gradually the efficacy of its multidimensional forceps and three-dimensional endoscope was increasingly applied to diverse diseases outside the cardiac field. Notably, robot-assisted surgery is becoming the gold standard for urological surgeries including prostatectomy.
