Foreign bodies are a frequent and serious problem in emergency departments: ingested foreign objects may occur accidentally or deliberately. Most ingested foreign bodies pass through the gastrointestinal tract without a problem. However, ingested or inserted foreign bodies may cause bowel obstruction or perforation or may lead to severe hemorrhage, abscess formation, or septicemia.
