Tribological Considerations and Clinical Consequences
Successful long-term results of total hip arthroplasty are mainly due to two facts: long-term stability of the implant and minimal wear of the articulating surfaces. Currently, wear of the articulating components remains the most challenging problem. The fi rst part of the book includes articles on ceramic technology and clinical implications. The major advantage of ceramic-on-ceramic is the very low wear rate. Nevertheless, there is still concern because of squeaking and possible fracture of the ceramic components.
