Hypertension is the most prevalent risk factor for heart failure (HF) and large epidemiological studies show it to carry the highest population attributable risk for this disease compared to all other risk factors. A long known positive aspect, however, is that the blood pressure (BP) attributable risk of HF is modifiable by therapeutic interventions because randomized trials have shown that reducing an elevated BP by drug treatment is accompanied by a significant reduction in the risk of developing HF.
