Adipose tissue has traditionally been considered as a virtually inert tissue, mainly devoted to energy storage. As a consequence, research on the role of adipose tissue in physiology and pathology has been relatively neglected and “out-of-fashion” until the mid 1990s, when the discovery of leptin (in 1994) and adiponectin (in 1995) led to a major renaissance in this field.
