During the past decade, the field of stroke has emerged from an era of therapeutic nihilism to a speciality that offers timely therapies to reperfuse the ischemic brain. While there has been limited success with thrombolytic agents for acute stroke, few patients receive these medications because of the narrow therapeutic time window.
