The phrase “The Two Cultures” was used by Charles Percy Snow in the title of his 1959 Rede Lecture at the University of Cambridge: although he had already used it in an article he had published three years earlier in The New Statesman, it was the Rede Lecture that attracted to it immediate and very wide attention. In the Lecture, Snow had actually only spoken of scientific as opposed to literary culture and had not discussed artistic culture in general.
