The fi eld of percutaneous therapy for mitral regurgitation has grown dramatically since the first procedures were performed in June and July 2003. When fi rst performed in patients, the technical and cognitive features of both the device manipulations and procedure goals were not well de fi ned. Each movement of the catheter required some discussion among the procedural team. Optimal imaging planes for transesophageal echo guidance of the procedure had not been developed. Communication between the echocardiographer and the interventional physician was dif fi cult because the two disciplines used completely different nomenclature to describe the left atrial and mitral valve anatomy.
