Intraoperative monitoring of the nervous system (IOM) has become common place in orthopedics, neurosurgery, otologic surgery, vascular surgery, and other procedures. In addition to the improvement in patient outcome which has been observed in several circumstances, the monitoring has been incorporated into the management of surgical procedures where the nervous system is at risk.
