A week-long postgraduate course was organised in Trieste, Italy, in 1994. This course was extremely popular Europe wide. Participants were so impressed that they asked for copies of the lectures, and as a result of the many requests, lecturers were asked to provide a manuscript of their lecture(s). These manuscripts resulted in the first edition of this book, published in 1998.
