Major breakthroughs in biomedical research are often followed by paradigm shifts in our understanding of diseases. This was particularly true after the landmark discovery
of hepatitis C virus (HCV). The identification of a small but viral-specific RNA sequence in the serum of patients with non-A, non-B hepatitis led directly to the development of tests for antibody and viral RNA.
