Diabetes mellitus is increasing in incidence, prevalence, and importance as a chronic disease throughout the world. The International Diabetes Federation projects that by 2030 there will be 552 million people with diabetes on a global scale. In the USA, the Centers for Disease Control calculates that 25.8 million people (or 8.3% of the population) have diabetes and nearly 2 million Americans develop diabetes each year.
