The African American church is widely recognized as a critical and influential institution within U.S. African American communities (Lincoln and Mamiya, 1990). Indeed,“religion has played a role in Black America that is considerably more holistic and effectual than its more segmented role in most white communities” (Wilmore 1989, xv).
