Current Practices and Future Directions
As noted by the authors of chapters in this volume—leading researchers, practitioners, and policy-makers in the field of homelessness—the face of homelessness has changed dramatically in recent decades. Historically, individuals who struggled with homelessness were single males, often characterized by serious mental illness and/or substance abuse; currently, the fastest growing segment of the homeless population is comprised of single mothers with young children.
