Gout has been a well-known disease for over 2000 years, and is the most common cause of joint inflammation in adult males [1]. Colchicine has been used to treat gout throughout the last three centuries [2], yet despite this, no drug was effectively and safely used to treat hyperuricemia in gout until the mid-20th century.
