This is an exciting time for those working in the field of kidney vascular injury and repair. Despite, or perhaps partly because of, major advances in imaging diagnosis and therapy, large vessel occlusive disease of the renal arteries continues to pose major clinical challenges and can be a major source of confusion. In the United States and most western countries, atherosclerosis is the major cause of renovascular disease (RVD) and has been recognized as a major contributor to the development of renovascular hypertension for more than 80 years.
