Impact in Children and Social Minorities
Emotional, physical, and sexual abuse may have devastating effects on victims. This is particularly true when victims are socially vulnerable individuals, such as children, disables, or sexual minorities. Emotional and physical abuse has a corrosive impact on mental health and well-being, exacerbating the low self-esteem, poor coping behaviors, and social relationships of individuals. Indeed, sexual abuse when occurring in a crucial period for developing emotion, mature self-representation, personality and social relationship—such as childhood is—may result in severe sexual and mental health disorders.
