Magnifying Endoscopy in the Stomach

I first performed zoom gastroscopy (magnifying endoscopy of the stomach) in May 2000. I felt most fortunate as a researcher and a clinician, as it became possible to observe the microvascular architecture as small as a capillary, the smallest unit of human blood vessels, thereby making numerous novel endoscopic findings. In particular, when we were the first in the world to identify the microvascular architecture characteristic of early gastric cancer, I remember trembling with excitement as I thought, “The Goddess of Science has pulled aside her veil of secrecy, giving me a glimpse of the truth!” Since then, 10 years have passed in the blink of an eye, as we have continued to investigate and report the clinical usefulness of zoom gastroscopy in a variety of applications.
