Ten years have passed since the completion of the first edition of this book. During this decade, there has been an explosion of new information about the genetic and metabolic basis of pediatric liver and bowel diseases. Despite this, the questions “Why a second edition?” and even “What is the purpose of this book?” remain relevant. As clinical and basic science produce significant advances, there is a critical need for an integration of the clinical and pathological features of complex diseases. Practitioners and trainees alike must be familiar with an increasingly large and complicated body of knowledge in highly specialized fields.
