December 1, 2011, was the 24th annual World AIDS Day. This one was particularly significant as 2011 marked the 30th anniversary of the first diagnosis of an AIDS patient. The organizers of World AIDS Day launched a 5-year campaign entitled “Getting to Zero,” a theme that was meant to encompass the goals of zero new HIV infection, zero discrimination, and zero AIDS-related deaths. Many high-pro file people, politicians in particular, chimed in to echo the ambitious goals of the campaign. Hilary Rodham Clinton said that an AIDS-free generation was finally achievable.
