Volume III: Cardiovascular Events
According to the recent WHO statistics, cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death globally with an estimated 17.3 million people dying from cardiovasculardisease in 2008, representing 30 % of all global deaths. Of these deaths, an estimated 7.3 and 6.2 million were attributed to coronary heart disease and stroke, respectively. Undisputedly, cardiovascular diseases are predicted to remain as the leading cause of death. Over the past decades, we have gained substantial knowledge about the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying disease initiation and progression and in parallel have identified a plethora of potential risk factors.
