Modern medical practice is dominated by technology and evidence based medicine emphasizing the importance of scientific data to guide our daily practice. But through the years, as medicine has crossed different cultures and borders, it has been and will be always be the ultimate value-based activity, much of which is not necessarily based in evidence. Through history the practice of medicine in Ancient Egypt, Ancient China, India and other old civilizations was deeply connected with the religious and social values of these societies at that time. It is important to note and remember that physicians and surgeons are not allowed to practice medicine before taking the Hippocratic Oath which has become an essential part of Graduation Ceremonies of Faculties/Schools of Medicine all over the world.
