Despite the rapid evolution of minimally invasive spine (MIS) surgery over the past decade, there exists little consensus among spine surgeons regarding the precise definition of this field. Is minimally invasive spinal surgery defi ned by the length of the incision, the minimizing of damage to collateral structures, expedited recovery, or reduced surgical risks and complications? In reality, all of these are worthwhile goals that surgeons should strive to accomplish without sacrificing the ultimate aims of the procedure.
