This book aims to teach medical students and other medical and clinical personnel how to perform a clinical examination in the infant or child who has a potential surgical condition. Most textbooks of paediatric surgery focus on the pathological classi fi cation and overall management of disease, rather than on the practical details of how a diagnosis is made. However, no matter how much knowledge trainees and surgeons have about diseases and their treatment, this is useless if the diagnosis is wrong: the foundations must be solid if we wish to construct a sophisticated plan of management.
