The American population over the age of 65 (the Medicare Population) will grow greatly in the next two decades. The US Census Bureau has estimated that by 2030, 20 % (approximately 72 million people) of the US population will be in this group. Currently one in every ten individuals in the world is over 60 years of age; by 2050 this number will double to 1 in 5. Additionally, due to improvements in medical care, elderly individuals are living longer.
