Old and older: ready or not, here they come!
It is common knowledge that the population is aging—in 2011, the 78 million baby boomers born between 1946 and 1964 began to turn 65, marking the beginning of a new and considerably greyer America. By 2030, 20% of the US population will be over 65 years—up from 12% in 2005. The shift in the demographics is going to signi fi cantly challenge our healthcare system. The question is, are we ready? In the fi eld of anesthesiology—especially in our role as leaders in perioperative medicine—we need to address the aging problem aggressively—by educating and engaging our residents and peers.
