Major depressive disorder (MDD) is remarkably common. At any one time, worldwide, over 120 million people may be suffering from depression. Lifetime risks vary from 10 to 25 % for women and 5 to 12 % for men for Major Depression, with some indication that these estimates have risen over the past two decades. MDD is defined by episodes of low mood and/or anhedonia with changes in physical and psychological function. These episodes are highly recurrent.
