Every year 140 million children are born around the globe, and the great majority of those mothers and newborns receive care from maternity service providers, professions with a wide range of status and training. Their background varies from traditional birth attendants (TBAs), who frequently learned the job through experience, to highly specialised midwives with a complete university education. There is a wide variety in their responsibilities and daily practices.
