In the last decade, our understanding of the function of the human body and the interaction of drugs with certain molecular targets has increased significantly. This deepened insight is a result of the wider availability of new diagnostic tools such as those developed by the different “-omics” disciplines (genomics, proteomics, etc.), but largely also of the application of noninvasive, in vivo imaging techniques applying molecular targets and markers.
