As a physician who provides care for older patients, I know healthy aging when I see it. Some of my older patients who are healthy have been lucky with regard to their health. They have been fortunate to avoid developing diseases that they had little or no way of preventing; diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, pancreatic cancer, or multiple sclerosis. Genetic disorders with a Mendelian transmission such as Huntington’s disease provide the clearest example of luck or chance in the development of a disease.
