Medical disorders of the stomach and small intestine are quite common in the general population. Community-based surveys consistently demonstrate that up to 20% of the Western population suffers from symptoms of dyspepsia, while 10% report symptoms of recurrent nausea and vomiting, and more than 30% suffer from chronic symptoms of gas and bloating.
