Since its introduction to clinical practice in 1963, liver transplantation has become the treatment for both acute and chronic end-stage liver failure as well as for liverdependent metabolic diseases. By any measure, the improvements seen in this therapeutic option have been spectacular. Even its founding father, Thomas E. Starzl, could not have foreseen how commonplace this procedure would become such that as of today more than 400,000 liver transplantations have been performed worldwide.
