Since the successful invention three decades ago of the first magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system by Damadian et al. for cancer diagnosis, the medical use of MRI has become an essential component in the diagnosis and management of patients with a wide range of diseases. Extensive hardware and software advances have surmounted initial obstacles in imaging a rapidly beating heart and allowed imagers to apply MRI techniques to patients with cardiovascular pathology.
