According to statistics published by the Japanese Association for Thoracic Surgery in 2012, mitral valvuloplasty accounted for 66% of the total number of isolated mitral valve surgeries during that year in Japan, whereas aortic valvuloplasty accounted for only 4%. Aortic valvuloplasty was also only performed in 23% of patients who underwent isolated aortic root surgery for non-dissecting aneurysm.
