Tackling antibiotic resistance from a food safety perspective in Europe

Infections caused by antibiotic-resistant bacteria are increasing in the community and in health care settings, becoming a major public health problem that challenges the health care systems in countries in the WHO European Region. Owing to the use and misuse of antibiotics, resistance can develop in bacteria in human beings and animals, and infections that normally respond to antibiotic treatment can become difficult and sometimes impossible to cure.
