A healthy start to life without maltreatment and adversity in childhood is a mainstay of the actions required to reduce inequity in Europe and achieve the goals of Health 2020. Child maltreatment is the product of social, cultural, economic and biological factors and occurs in all societies and countries in the WHO European Region. It is a leading cause of health inequality and social injustice, with the socioeconomically disadvantaged more at risk.
