Health diplomacy has been carried out for over 150 years, but the term is relatively new. It relates in particular to health issues and determinants that cross national boundaries, are global in nature and require global agreements to address them. In the WHO European Region, the environment and health process can be understood as a turning point in modern health diplomacy. In the late 1980s, European Member States initiated the first-ever collaboration to eliminate the most significant environmental threats to human health.
