MDR-TB is a continuing challenge in many parts of the world and particularly in the WHO European Region: of the 27 countries worldwide with a high burden of MDR-TB, 15 are in the European Region. An estimated 75 000 new cases of MDR-TB occurred in the Region in 2013, of which approximately 10% were XDR-TB. In response to the alarming problem of drug resistant (DR) TB, the WHO Regional Director for Europe established a special project in 2010 linking (MDR) TB control with health systems strengthening.
