Recent years have witnessed continuing increases in the incidence of malignant neoplasms, cardiovascular disease, and neurological disorders in most developed countries. At the same time, in spite of signifi cant progress in the development of various medical technologies, there has been substantial growth in cases with an unfavorable outcome (death or disability). It is well known that the effi cient treatment of different diseases depends to a great extent on timely and precise diagnosis, and this is still especially true with regard to the most widespread, severe, and socially signifi cant diseases.
