Six years have elapsed since the third edition of this book was published and during that time there have been advances in investigative techniques, both laboratory- based and clinical. My own specialty, haematology, has seen refinements in diagnostic tests for conditions such as leukaemias and lymphomas, but there have also been developments in the red cell and clotting arenas.
