When Derek Llewellyn-Jones prepared the first edition o Fundamentals of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, the professions’ perception o the priorities o women’s health was somewhat different to those 50 years on. Maternity and gynaecological care was primarily medical in focus, and management was based on the teachings, personal experience and beliefs of senior clinicians.
