Preventive cardiology has made substantial contributions to reducing the toll of cardiovascular disease (CVD) during the past 50 years but despite these advances, CVD remains the leading cause of death in the United States, and the global burden of the disease continues to rise. In addition, the epidemic of obesity and the increase in diabetes threaten to reverse the downward trend of CVD.
