DNA is an essential component of life and its integrity plays a key role in sustaining normal life functions including DNA replication, genetic recombination, transcription and DNA repair. DNA is constantly threatened by numerous environmental and intrinsic deleterious physical and chemical agents, such as UV light, ionizing radiation, reactive oxygen species (ROS) and various chemical agents, which can act as mutagens and carcinogens.
