Mechanical circulatory and respiratory support (MCRS) systems have become commonplace over the past two decades. Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) has been used to provide circulatory and/or respiratory support, while ventricular assist devices and total artificial hearts are used to provide solely mechanica circulatory support, often for much longer support durations.
