With the establishment of the society of microcirculation in the 1980s, our understanding of microcirculation and tissue perfusion has fundamentally changed. The discovery of functions of endothelial glycocalyx and its essential role in maintaining the intact vascular barrier by Professors Curry and Michel has led to a new era in perioperative fluid management.
