Since radiolabeled estrogens were first observed in the early 1960s to be preferentially concentrated in estrogen target organs — observations that gave rise to the concept of an ‘‘estrogen receptor (ER),’’ it has become clear that many human breast cancers are dependent on estrogen for their growth.
