Dentistry is medicine–oral medicine. The integration of the discipline of dentistry with the larger community of medicine, in education and in practice, is an imperative. The multi-faceted elements of health care reform, and specifically the mandate to create and implement a comprehensive health information system, has the potential to accomplish the integration that dentistry as been unable, and generally unwilling, to accomplish.
