Fatty liver disease including nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) involves the accumulation of triglycerides in hepatocytes with necrosis, inflammation, and often fibrosis with progression to cirrhosis. The two-hit model summarizes the important early metabolic events leading to hepatocellular necrosis in NASH.
