It has been 15 years since the ryanodine receptor/calcium release channel (RyR) cDNA was cloned, ushering in a new age of understanding for the largest known ion channel. Prior to the cloning of its cDNA, RyR was known to be a calcium release channel in the terminal cisternae of the sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR).
